Think of it as a Sonar in a Sub.. It sends out a signal and when it hits something, it bounces back to where the signal originated from. From that you can determine distance/size.

Same thing with a ping.. You basically send a packet out to a certain address/ip address.. It then hits its target and returns it back. Thus returning back the time it took to send it..

We gamers use it all the time to determine how good of a game experience you will have (Lag wise).
